I meant to get this up earlier, on Los Angeles day, but the email from Fantagraphics didn’t come through until this morning. Yes, readers, I do have written permission to reproduce this material.
"This material" being a comic Gilbert Hernandez, of Los Bros Hernandez fame, drew in 1980 of him and his then-future wife, photographer and current Comic-Con attendee Carol Kovinick Hernandez, at an X concert. Notice (if the detail allows it) the punk in the background with a swastika on his shirt, Exene’s singing rended as “whine whine whine,” and an artist’s rendition of the Smile of Zoom.
Reproduced in Love & Rockets Sketchbook (Fantagraphics, 1989). The copy is my husband’s — yes, he introduced me to both X and Los Bros Hernandez. The terrible scan is mine.
(Edited to add: the official Fantagraphics Tumblr would like you to know that the comic is also available in the more recent Love & Rockets Companion.) High-res
