An Unearthly Child
I offer this as an imaginative exercise for the reader—here we have (until the BBC makes me take it down) the original opening credits and closing credits for “An Unearthly Child”, the first episode of Doctor Who. I apologize for the slightly subpar video quality; hopefully it should be clear enough to get the idea across.
The video effects were achieved by pointing two cameras at each other, and the resulting visual feedback was overlaid with the text. Imagine, if you will, being a child in 1963 and seeing that come on, accompanied by that sound. I don’t know about you, but I would have been creeped out beyond all recognition. I would also have not been able to stop watching. Note as well how the theme plays out over the mundane visuals of the policeman poking around the junkyard, and the hum that takes over the soundtrack as we get our first look at the TARDIS.
The closing credits are largely unremarkable, but keep your eyes open and you’ll see “Title music by RON GRAINER with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop”.
ETA: And that was set to Private, and it shouldn’t have been. If you tried to view it earlier and couldn’t, try again. Sorry!
